Farming Foundations – a tour for all ages
Outdoor Learning at Forsythe Family Farms
Get outside and experience the wonder, joy, and discovery of a real working farm. At Forsythe Family Farms, children explore the everyday connections between farms, food, and nature using all five senses in a fun, hands-on environment. With real-life farm experiences, students will gain valuable insight into local food systems, agriculture, and the important role farms play in our everyday lives.
Located just east of Uxbridge in North Durham Region, our working family farm is a short drive from Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Our farm serves as a vibrant outdoor classroom for school field trips and educational farm tours, where children of all ages can strengthen their connection to local food, sustainable farming practices, and the natural world.
What Students Experience During Our Guided Educational Farm Tours
Students actively explore how a working farm connects to their everyday lives — from the food they eat and beverages they drink to the products they use each day. Through real-life farm activities and sensory learning, they gain a deeper understanding of where food comes from and why local farming matters.
Students will:
🌱Meet friendly farm animals and learn how farmers care for them
🌱Explore fruit and vegetable fields to see how crops grow throughout the season
🌱Discover how food is grown and harvested on a working family farm
🌱Learn about the journey from farm to table and how food reaches their plates
🌱Understand the role of local agriculture in supporting healthy communities
🌱Explore seasonal food production and what grows at different times of the year
During our guided educational farm tours, students participate in hands-on farm activities that spark curiosity and confidence through engaging, curriculum-connected activities that help them explore the connection between farms, food, and the natural world.
Our mission is to nurture curiosity, deepen agricultural literacy, and inspire lifelong appreciation for farming and nature. We aim to help the next generation understand not only how food is grown, but also the important role farms play in healthy communities.

🌱 Farm tours are available May to mid-November, with activities and crops changing throughout the seasons to highlight what is growing and happening on the farm.
Stone Soup – Building community and connections through food.

Our community-themed Farming Foundations tour
Participants pick a variety of crops from our fields to take with them keeping in mind the spirit of the “Stone Soup” story. Everything harvested goes into a basket or box to be later shared.
The focus of this tour is on the community and not the individual. A good theme to focus on if you have a community service project planned, a food bank to donate to or you’re making soup for everyone. If you wish to divide the harvest equally amongst the participants, this can be done back at your school.
