The Buy Fresh, Buy Local movement
was gaining momentum as far back as 2008 exploded this past year as COVID 19 exposed challenges in our food supply system. The focus of where our food comes from shifted to sourcing locally grown with nearly 5% of Canadians surveyed saying they have bought food directly from farmers since the pandemic began.
Buying local, for many, was relegated to an occasional trip to the farmers market or local farm for that special meal at home. Buying fresh, locally produced product gave that meal a good story about the farmer and the food.
While access to restaurants became more restricted during COVID 19, interest in local food accellerated. Our relationship with home cooked food blossomed and fruit and vegetable consumption increased as people focused on staying healthy and safe.
